John Daly smoked 21 cigarettes, drank 12 cans of coke and no water at PGA Tour event

John Daly once smoked 21 cigarettes, drank 12 cans of Coke at a Tour event with no water.

The controversial golfer is known among fans for his somewhat different style to today's fitness-obsessed stars.

Nicknamed 'Long John' because of his powerful drive, Daly can often be spotted smoking a cigarette or necking a can of Coke around the course.

And that has not stopped him from proving a hit, winning two majors in the PGA Championship in 1991 and The Open Championship in 1995.

Daly has been a professional since 1987 but has not exactly stuck to the usual etiquette that surrounds golf.

In 2008, during a practice round at Wyndham Championship, the Californian had something of an unorthodox approach to the course.

CBS Senior Sports Writer Will Brinson explained on social media his run-in with the 57-year-old that has stuck in his mind ever since.

He tweeted: "Quick John Daly story while he's still under par. I don't think you can find the story online, the Internet doesn't actually keep anything forever.

"But way back when I worked at FanHouse, RIP, I covered the 2008 Wyndham Championship and Daly was the biggest name.

"After Round 1, Daly set up shop at the Greensboro Hooters where he was doing that Daly thing and signing autographs.

"Daly was in full Promotional Daly mode at this point and a huge draw.

"Anywho, best part of the week was following Daly around for a practice round either Tues or Wed.

"Followed him for 18 holes, hawking his every move, taking meticulous notes every time he reached for his golf bag, took a bite or a sip or a puff.

"The final tally of literally everything he put into his body over a full 18 holes: 21 cigs 12 Diet Cokes 6 packs of Peanut M&M's 0.0 ounces of water."

Another attendee that day was struck by memory and replied: "I remember this!

"And if memory serves it was only eleventy billion degrees out. Who needs water?"

Brinson responded saying: "Greensboro in mid-August with nothing but M&M's, cigs and DCs is basically like crawling through the Sahara!"

Hardly your average county clubber, Daly might not look the part but he can certainly play.
